When you look at your yard, do you see a laundry list of unfinished projects? Roses that prick your finger every time you prune them? Grass you've mowed for the millionth time this summer? Fear not; all you need is a change in direction. Get ready to kick back as Greenscape explores five low-maintenance Louisiana landscaping!
1. Plant and Forget with Evergreens
As you may have guessed, evergreens stay alive all year long. Evergreens are the way to go when it comes to low-maintenance Louisiana landscaping. You can find evergreen trees, shrubs, and ground cover. All of which are perfect for kicking back and enjoying a colorful garden.
Below are two of our favorite evergreen shrubs!
Camellia Sasanqua 'Shi Shi Gashira'
Camellias are a tried-and-true addition to flower beds. Coming in pink or white, Shi Shi Camellias add a pop of color to the regular old ground cover!
Plant Type: Evergreen shrub
Maintenance: Low
Exposure: Full sun, partial shade
Soil: Slightly acidic, well-drained
Zones: 7-10
Fox Tail Fern (Asparagus Densiflorus 'Myers')
The aptly named “Fox Tail Fern” is a simple but eye-catching shrub. Its striking foliage adds an exciting texture to any garden bed!
Plant Type: Perennial evergreen shrub
Maintenance: Low
Exposure: Full sun, partial shade
Soil: Slightly acidic, well-drained
Zones: 9-11
2. Get in the (Growing) Zone
USDA Growing Zones determine which are better suited to different areas. A hardiness zone is dictated by an area’s lowest average winter temperatures. For instance, Baton Rouge is in Zone 9a because our winter lows range from 20 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit.
Tip: If a non-hardy plant catches your eye, you can still plant it as an annual. You’ll just need to replant it next growing season!
3. Jeepers Creepers
Creeping or procumbent plants are small vining plants perfect for groundcover. Creeping plants (like the Liriope above) spread quickly, making them a simple way to add excitement to large beds. Mat-forming creepers like low-growing clover can even replace traditional turf yards.
Tip: Climbing plants are similar to creepers. However, they grow vertically and are perfect for decorating empty walls.
4. Two, Four, Six, Eight— Automate and Irrigate!
Watering your plants may be an afterthought in Baton Rouge’s moist climate. However, all it takes is a brief dry spell for the sun to damage foliage.
An irrigation system is excellent. However, it’s no use if you forget to set it. Talk to your landscaper about installing a WiFi clock to automate your irrigation system. Automating your irrigation ensures your Louisiana greens never miss a water break!
5. Less to Mow? Way to Go!
Tired of mowing in the hot southern sun? Understandable! Luckily, there are tons of great turf alternatives like mulch or gravel. Take a break from the push mower by opting for a yard with simple ground cover plants!
